Mary Carol Sharer, IHM Associate

Mary Carol Sharer, a devoted Catholic and active member of her community, passed away peacefully at her Rochester Hills home on May 12, 2023, at the age of 81. Formerly a resident of Troy, Mary Carol leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to her family and faith.

Born as Mary Carol Bussey on August 16, 1941, in Detroit, she was the cherished daughter of the late Theodore and Virginia Bussey. Mary Carol began her journey of service by becoming an IHM Sister, and later an IHM Associate, committing herself to a life of faith and devotion for 14 years. However, her passion for working with children led her to change paths and start a family of her own.

Mary Carol was a dedicated teacher, having served at various Catholic schools throughout her career. She later concluded her formal teaching career at Detroit Public Schools, leaving an indelible impact on the lives of her students. Even after retiring, her love for education continued to shine through her volunteer work at church, where she taught Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, to children as young as two years old.

Mary Carol was a loving and devoted mother of Jennifer (Casey) Anderson, Christopher (Julie) Sharer, and Timothy (Stephanie) Sharer. Her children and their families brought her immense joy and fulfillment. Mary Carol was the proud and adoring Nana of her grandchildren, Elizabeth, Erica, Rachel, and Penelope. She cherished her role as a grandmother and created countless memories. She was also the dear sister of the late Ann Marie (the late Ron) Juk.

Mary Carol had a zest for life and a profound appreciation for the beauty of nature. She particularly loved being near the water, whether it was swimming at the Rochester Hills swimming pool or enjoying the tranquility of Michigan’s scenic lakes.
