Recognizing the many interconnected needs of the world, the IHM Justice, Peace and Sustainability Office’s work is focused around ecological integrity, social justice, economic justice and peacemaking and global solidarity.

These issues correspond with the IHM community’s congregational priorities and with the fundamental principles outlined in The Earth Charter.

Change begins when faithful people step forward. Join us in advocating for human dignity, protecting our planet, and safeguarding democracy. Your voice matters—make it heard!


Standing Strong with Indivisible: Ways to Engage

Indivisible is one of the main activist networks these days, stretching across the country and very involved in demonstrations. Locally, here are a few Indivisible things you can connect with:

General Meetings:

  • Date & Time: Meetings are held every month on the first Thursday with meet-up connections or letter-writing action at 6 and the formal meeting at 6:30. 
  • Where: United Methodist Church on Woodward south of 9 Mile.

Visibility Brigade:

  • Date & Time: Every Friday, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. 
  • Where: Come to the bridge over I-75 just north of 9 Mile (at Browning). Register here.

Combatting Authoritarian Practices: Lessons from Around the World

  • Action Type: Join the discussion
  • Date & Time: Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. ET
  • Description: Amnesty International leaders from Hungary, Argentina, Kenya, and Turkey will share reflections on how those in power have leveraged authoritarian practices to restrict rights and how civil society adapted and learned to challenge them. They will share specific lessons learned on how to survive setbacks and push forward to advance human rights protections. Amnesty International aims for this to be a concrete discussion to inform US civil society as we move forward, and a Q&A session will follow. We welcome your questions in advance to help shape this conversation

Protect International lifesaving and life-affirming aid

  • Action Type: Send a message
  • Date & Time: Ongoing
  • Description: Join Catholic Relief Services in telling Congress that we have a moral duty to alleviate poverty and reduce human suffering by protecting international humanitarian and development assistance. International assistance protects human life and promotes human dignity; advances U.S. and global peace and security; and fosters economic development that benefits U.S. taxpayers and people living in poverty around the world.

New START Treaty

  • Action Type: Send a message
  • Date & Time: Ongoing
  • Description: The New START Treaty will expire Feb. 4, 2026. The impending expiration of this treaty increases the likelihood of a renewed nuclear arms race and the risk of nuclear war.
  • Take Action: Follow the Back from the Brink campaign and click here to contact your Members of Congress asking them to support resolutions for a comprehensive nuclear disarmament framework.

Enbridge’s Line 5 Oil Tunnel Project

  • Action Type: Submit a comment
  • Date & Time: Ongoing
  • Description: Enbridge’s 72-year-old Line 5 pipeline has spilled 1.1 million gallons of oil along its length. Enbridge now wants to build a massive tunnel through the Straits of Mackinac to extend its life.
  • Take Action: Submit a comment to Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy urging a review of the Line 5 project here.
