During America’s 250th anniversary, it is important to focus on foundational figures from the African American community like Elizabeth Freeman “Mum Bett” (1744-1824), Phillis Wheatley (1753-1784), and Harriet Tubman (1822-1913), who fought for freedom and shaped national and democratic ideas.
In addition to hearing stories about these great women, we will look at a present-day activist, Nikole Hannah-Jones, author of the 1619 Project, who has used her voice to exposed systemic inequality and racial disparities.
