The newest exhibit in the Motherhouse Gallery is the Soul Box Project: This Loss We Carry, representing the number of gun violence victims in Michigan and Ohio. On June 29, sisters, residents and staff gathered in the Maxis Community Room to create their own Soul Box. Every Soul Box is a hand-folded origami box that holds a space for a single life; Each represents a victim of gunfire in the U.S. that will be included in this national project. On October 16-17, 2021, The Soul Box Project exhibited 200,000 Soul Boxes on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. At that time, this represented the number of people killed or injured by gunfire in the U.S. in just three years.

The very act of folding can provide solace to a person experiencing trauma – directly or indirectly – from gunfire incidents. Folding a Soul Box is a non-confrontational, nonpartisan way to express outrage or frustration, hope and love.
Our goal is to make 77 Soul Boxes, the number of gun violence deaths in Michigan in the month of May. Stay tuned to see if we accomplished it!
