The reality of grief

Living everyday with loss

It’s difficult to live with grief. Yet, we know that if we do not face grief, we will not be able heal
and find joy again. But how do we welcome grief? Once we experience the loss of a loved one,
the grief never really goes away. However, it can change. Depending on how we care for
ourselves, grief can become life-giving or an overwhelming burden. During our evening
together, we’ll explore ways to journey through grief, engage in conversation and begin a
personal project that helps us reflect on our loved one. This “legacy project” will be something
we can take home and continue to create.

Judith Bonini, IHM, has been a spiritual/retreat director for over 25 years. She was trained at the
Detroit Center for Religious Development and the Leadership Institute in Chicago. She is also a
board-certified chaplain through the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. She endeavors
to follow the lead of those coming for direction to discover how God is moving them toward love
and unity.

Cristy Smith is the coordinator of River House IHM Spirituality Center. She is a mother of three and
serves her church as a deaconess. She has a certification of Women’s Leadership Studies from Church
Leadership Academy of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. Previously, she served as a women’s
retreat director in her church’s district and the Women’s Ministry Director. Currently Cristy is enrolled
in Grief Companionship Certification through the Center for Transition and Loss.
