Five Habits to Heal the Heart of Democracy - Parker Palmer

The Issue

"In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation," write the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. The Bishops urge citizens "to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest."

This challenge is compounded during the 2012 election cycle. The political process has gone through drastic changes as a result of the 2010 Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. the Federal Election Commission. In ruling on the case, the justices concluded that Congress could not block corporations, labor unions or any associations from spending as much money as they want and how they want to influence campaigns. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, about $210 million was spent by independent groups to influence federal elections in 2010 (up from about $50 million in 2006.) Anonymous sources made up 47% of it. Far more money is expected to be spent in 2012. For an excellent summary of the Citizens United ruling, watch Annie Leonard's video short, The Story of Citizens United.

Because of this massive corporate influence, campaign ads have become less illuminating about candidates' true positions. Instead, they often twist the truth and obscure the impacts of particular policies in order to manipulate voters. In the wake of Citizens United, it is important that responsible citizens view ads, debates, websites and all manner of political rhetoric with a critical eye. To help navigate the political landscape leading up to the November 2012 elections, the IHM Justice, Peace and Sustainability Office has compiled a list of resources to help voters understand the impact of Citizens United, critically analyze campaign ads, and discern political choices based on principles of Catholic social teaching.

The Debunking Handbook - Although there is a great deal of psychological research on misinformation, there's no summary of the literature that offers practical guidelines on the most effective ways of reducing the influence of myths. The Debunking Handbook boils the research down into a short, simple summary, intended as a guide for communicators in all areas who encounter misinformation.

The Handbook explores the surprising fact that debunking myths can sometimes reinforce the myth in peoples' minds. Communicators need to be aware of the various backfire effects and how to avoid them.

Why Politicians Get Away With Lying - Maybe it's a sign that the public has given up on honesty from presidential candidates. Instead, in a recent flurry prompted by the public editor of The New York Times, the assumption seems to be that politicians will always lie and that voters' defense against that is fact checking by journalists. But why do voters let politicians lie to them? What sort of lies do people accept, and which do they object to?

Michigan Truth Squad - A Project of the Center for Michigan, Michigan Truth Squad analyzes and cries "foul" on misleading and negative TV and Web campaign ads.
